A few days after we have left the sub-continent, I have finally been able to sort out a few further photos of some of the birds we encountered in the southern India state of Kerala. Most of these were found when walking through the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary although some were found in the grounds of the wonderful Greenwoods lodge that we stayed in whilst in Thekkady, 4km from the sanctuary.
The 3 hour plus drive from Kochi on the coast was quite spectacular. The narrow road wound around steep forested highlands as well as small but bustling local towns. We had coffee on the balcony of one cafe which had a breathtaking view across the valley below and the nearby treetops were buzzing with colourful birdlife.
After a couple of days at Greenwoods we were driven to Alleppey (Alappuzha) which is well known for its picturesque waterways. We boarded a magnificent houseboat with a couple of air-conditioned en-suit bedrooms and a galley manned by an excellent cook. This took us slowly along country waterways past villages, fields and forests. We spent our last night in India aboard the houseboat, getting up a 3.30am to get to Cotchin airport in time for our return flights.
Hopefully soon I will have sorted out our non-bird photos (we did take some!!), and will post a selection shortly.
