Attidiya Wetlands, Colombo

Our first full day in Colombo was a frustrating one. We had decided to explore prospective wetlands not that far from our hotel. We hired a driver to take us, but he got hopelessly lost and we never really found the proper entrance to the urban wetlands. Nevertheless we did manage to skirt around the outside of what must have been Attidiya and did manage to photograph quite a nice collection of birds.

This was followed by a brief trip to the nearby Colombo Zoo which was possibly the worst zoo I have ever visited! – and expensive to boot….

Here are a few shots of some quite nice wetland birds at Attidiya and one of greater flamingos at the zoo.

White-throated Kingfisher
Red-wattled Lapwing
Crested Serpent Eagle
Purple Swamp Hen

Pheasant-tailed Jacana
