We finally got away last month in time to catch the rainbow bee-eaters that had been seen around the Glenrowan caravan park before they move further north for the winter. We were lucky to get the prime cabin for birdwatchers which had a small garden pond just a couple of meters from the deck.
The driveway and adjacent bushland was alive with bee-eaters and turquoise parrots and many other interesting birds.
We returned to Melbourne via the nearby Winton Wetlands (which seriously lacked water!). However we were lucky to see a family of painted button-quails (father and brood of about 10 chicks) doing their best to cross the road. Unfortunately the last chick (the smallest) was struggling to keep up and periodically turned over on its back before turning back to the wrong side of the road, and disappeared in the long grass. We searched for it for some time with no luck….Darwin comes to mind!Sorry – A gallery of photos will follow when I can work out where they have gone!!
