Following the conclusion of our birding tour, we were returned to a hotel in New Delhi. The next morning we commenced our 5 day “Golden Triangle” tour which took us to many grand (and some not so grand) historic places in New and Old Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. There were also a few stops between Agra and Jaipur to visit some significant historic sites, specifically the ruins of Fatehpur Sikri (the short-lived capital of the Mughal empire) and the fascinating Chand Baori stepwell (water “reservoir”). The palaces, temples and other important places of past and current importance to the Indian population were very much as impressive as many of the sites of similar vintage in the UK and Europe. The pictures below hopefully give some impression of the extraordinary contrast between the palace life of “old” India, and frankly the chaos of life in present times.
