During June 2024 we embarked on an extensive trip to Greece, Croatia and the UK. The main focus of the trip was a one week family sailing adventure along the Dalmatian coast starting and finishing at Split. We used the opportunity there to explore nearby destinations such as Crete, Athens, Dubrovnic and a week in the UK Lake District with our long time English friends, Rob and Jan Goodfellow.
This first posting contains photos of our time in Crete…wonderful historic locations as well as the bonus of lovely weather. In Crete we stayed largely in the capital, Heraklion as well as one night in Hania. Most of our time we spend visiting ancient ruins…the main one of course was the Palace of Knossis which dates back to 1700 BCE, however other Minoan palaces visited included Phaistos and Gortyn. We also visited the Fortezza fortress overlooking the city of Rethymno, build in the 16th century by Venetians who occupied Crete between 1200 and 1670, and the ruins on the island of Spinalonga also built by Venetians in the late 1500’s. Spinalonga had been used in the early 20th century as a leper colony.
