Following the completion of our sailing adventure around the Dalmatian Coast we returned to Split and then caught a bus to our next destination…Dubrovnik….a city that promised to be one of the highlights of our travel! It certainly didn’t disappoint. Our apartment was centrally located, but (unlike the advertisement claimed!) was a 50 step hike from street level, which with two heavy suitcases plus carry-on bags meant several journeys!! A waiter from a nearby restaurant kindly helped locate it and carry some of our luggage. We rewarded him by having an expensive meal in his restaurant!
We spent the next few days exploring all the sights and sampling the great food on offer. Everything was withing easy walking distance except for the cable car which took us to the top of the nearby range. This gave an unequaled panorama of the city. The one drawback which we were warned about beforehand was the huge numbers of tourists in large groups, mainly from cruise ships. The old city with its narrow pathways was certainly not built with that in mind.
A particular highlight was the trip on the cablecar to the top of nearby Mount Srd. As well as the view delivered, there was a nice restaurant and a Napoleonic fortress which houses a museum dedicated to the appalling 1991-92 “homeland war”.
